Unity of world Shiites, common goal of AhlulBayt (a.s.) World Assembly, Supreme Islamic Shia Council: Ali Al-Khatib

On Thursday morning, May 5, 2022, the Deputy Speaker of the Lebanese Supreme Islamic Shia Council met with Ayatollah Reza Ramazani, Secretary-General of the AhlulBayt (a.s.) World Assembly in the Assembly building in Qom.

In the meeting, Hojat al-Islam Sheikh Ali Al-Khatib stated, “The main task of the AhlulBayt (a.s.) World Assembly is to unite the Shiites and take care of their affairs. This is a common goal of the two organizations. Because uniting the Shiites has been one of the goals of establishing the Lebanese Supreme Islamic Shia Council. Therefore, the Assembly and the Supreme Council have an important and sacred duty.”

Emphasizing the need for cooperation and synergy between the Assembly and the Supreme Council, he added, “Imam Musa Sadr established the Lebanese Supreme Islamic Shia Council. He had greatness and depth of thought and strategy and was influential. After the abduction of Imam Musa Sadr, Allamah Shams al-Din played a pivotal role in the council. He sought to solve the problems of the Shiites in the Arab world and the Persian Gulf countries.”

“Many civilians and innocent people were killed in the Lebanese civil war. The aim of the civil war in Lebanon was to stop the reformist plan of Imam Musa Sadr,” he said, referring to the Lebanese civil war.

Regarding the role of Imam Musa Sadr in establishing resistance groups in Lebanon, he said, “The existence of armed groups and insecurity in the country cause the problems of southern Lebanon and the deprivation of Shiites, in addition to the aggression of the Zionist regime forces, which led to the displacement of Lebanese citizens. The Lebanese civil war took place due to divisions between religious groups, as well as the weakness of the government. The Zionist regime also used this opportunity and attacked Lebanon. There was no real resistance in this atmosphere. Therefore, Imam Musa Sadr established resistance groups to defend the land of Lebanon and succeeded in laying the foundation stone of the resistance group against the Zionist regime, despite all the existing problems.”

“Imam Musa Sadr sat in a mosque in Beirut, calling on the Lebanese to end the civil conflict and use weapons against the Zionist enemy,” he added.

“The activities and interaction of Imam Musa Sadr changed the view of the Arab countries towards the Shiites. Because they used to consider the Shiites as enemies in the Palestinian issue. He also established very good relations with the Arab countries, and through interaction and dialogue, he reduced the pressure on the Shiites,” he said, regarding other actions of Imam Musa Sadr.

“Allamah Shamsuddin continued the path of Imam Musa Sadr and deepened relations with Arab and Sunni countries. However, relations between Syria and the Lebanese Shiites were strategic. He deepened relations with the Sunnis and worked with them to solve problems. He had a deep mind, and in diverse society of Lebanon, he was able to sign the Taif Agreement and end the bloodshed in the country,” he added.

“The experience of Lebanese Shiites in interacting with Arab countries in resolving misunderstandings with Sunnis is valuable. At that time, Shiites were excommunicated in Egypt and Saudi Arabia. Allamah Shams al-Din traveled to Egypt and cleared up the misunderstanding that existed, and they withdrew from their positions,” he added, referring to the Lebanese experience.

“Allamah Qabala also continued the path of Allamah Shamsuddin and Imam Musa Sadr,” he stated, “The late Allamah had a good relationship with the Lebanese tribes and Sunnis.”

Praising the AhlulBayt (a.s.) World Assembly for organizing the Shiites of the world, he said, “The Assembly must also be active in the proximity of (Islamic) denominations.”

Announcing the readiness of the Lebanese Supreme Islamic Shia Council to cooperate with the AhlulBayt (a.s.) World Assembly, he said, “The Lebanese Supreme Islamic Shia Council has valuable experience at the global level, and the world has an accepting view of it.”
